Feast or Famine for Maui Fishermen

The Island is full of Tourists that were here for the Thanksgiving holiday, actually most of them are leaving; however check ins are still high at the Condos on Maui, so we are looking at a busy December here on Maui. (especially over the Holidays~ activities like the Old Lahaina Luau are already sold out!) Anyway...I called around to all the boats this morning and the only boat that had room for tomorrow was Start Me Up. (mind you they have 6 fishing boats on Maui alone)

It's not that the Maui fishing boats are full; it's the opposite; People are here on Maui, they just aren't spending their precious $dollars on activities & tours on Maui.

Bottom line is if you want to go fishing on Maui, don't wait until the last minute! It is usually feast or famine for the fishermen. They will either be sold out around the holidays or totally available before & after. If you call direct you may not be told that they need 3 or 4 people to CONFIRM on a "shared" fishing boat and they only have 1 or 2 people scheduled.

While all Maui sportfishing boats do a good job; certain boats (or captains) are more requested than others. Like I have been told that Captain Fuzzy is 1 of the most requested Captain in Lahaina (he now owns his own Maui sportfishing vessel: Die Hard; instead of Captaining for someone else~go Fuzzy! ) the other is Captain Tad Luckey with Luckey Strike Charters~ Fishing on the 'Real Lucky' (same owner/captain for over 20 yrs! Captain Tad upgraded his boat a few years ago ) * he has a live bait well (the only 1 on Maui) and uses a down-rigger + he used to scuba dive a lot of the places he now fishes.

Rascal catches 2 Mahi Mahi

Rascal had an 8 hour scheduled and there were 3 spots left, so I got to go out with them last Friday. Around 10:20 all of a sudden 2 lines went zinging, the sound every fisherman loves to hear! We caught a 16# and 20# Mahi Mahi (Dorado to you mainlanders). This time we went out to the HS buoy, then around the backside of Kahoolawe, going all the way around. We didn't catch the fish at the buoys however, we caught them on the way out, several miles south of Molokini.

Fishing can be quite exciting and while waiting for the Fish to bite, the views are incredible and you never know what you will see in terms of False Killer Whales, Dolphins etc.




OK, now check out the Video of the Escaping Mahi. It was in the fish bag, however not zipped up, as they were bringing in a 2nd Mahi. I chose not to put this one on our FaceBook page as it's a bit bloody.....

211# Pacific Blue Marlin caught by Capt. Timster

I was in Lahaina the other day when the fishing boats that went out that day started coming back in-all flying flags! Start Me Up had 2 boats out: Action with Captain Patrick does the "extreme" that departs @ 3:30A.M. so they are out at the fishing buoys by sunrise. Captain Patrick came in with several Mahi Mahi, while Captain Timster brought in a 211# Blue Marlin (if he caught anything else it got lost in the crowd and I forgot to ask...). I tried to get a video of the crew with the Marlin, however the one of the crew kept getting in my way. It is still a good short video, so I am putting it on here for you to watch.




Captain Fuzzy, Owner of Die Hard also brought in 5 Mahi Mahi (photo). Out of Maalaea Harbor Captain Kevin also brought in Mahi Mahi and hooked up to an Ono.
