Storm makes for good fishing in Hawaii

Recent storm makes for good deep Sea Fishing!

While Maui may not have seen the "Huricane or the Tropical Storm that was expected to hit Maui a few weeks ago, it did hit he Big Island pretty good and that left a lot of debree in the water. Hawaii Fishing boats love to come accross floating logs and nets. Fish will hang out by the nets, just waiting for you to catch them.

Captain Kevin told me last week after a charter that he probably could have caught close to 100 more than he brought in (that day was 9 Mahi, 8 Tuna and Aku and Ono)! However the customers who chartered the boat were ready to come in on time. {I was like, "R U Serious!?"}

You (my readers) and I... we just wish we could be on the boat when 'they' are reeling in that many fish!

Storm brings lots of Debris, which makes for great Sport Fishing!

While the recent Tropical Storm Iselle & Huricane Julio missed most of Hawaii, Iselle; after slamming into the large Volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii (and doing a bit of damage on the Hilo side of the Island) left a lot of debris in the ocean.

That Ocean debris is making for some great big game sport fishing off Maui, Kaho'olawe and Lana'i! Fish like ocean debris, we catch more fish when we find a floating net or something that has been in the water for a length of time.

All of the  Maui sport fishing tour operators  are doing well. Kevin from Rascal Fishing Chartes sent a couple of photos from this past week of Fishing. Yesterday he caught 6 Mahi, a few days before they caught 9 Mahi, 7 Ahi & 1 Aku (all Tuna's), 1 Ono,  and hooked up to a small Marlin!

Ono are impressive predators with razor sharp teeth

Popular Name: Wahoo

The Ono is a long, narrow and powerful fish that averages about 4-6 feet in length, and weighs about 15-60 pounds. With it's razor sharp teeth, the ono is an impressive predator that can swim up to 50 miles and hour and can attack both lures and bait with lightening fasts strikes, making them a favorite fish to hook up to. It's sharp teeth are perfectly designed for slashing, with the jaws working more like a pair of scissors.

The back is an iridescent bluish green; the sides are silvery with cobalt blue vertical stripes.

*Thank you to Tad and Cindy Lucky of Lucky Strike Charters for this photo taken on one of their fishing Charters.

Ono tend to be a solitary fish and their diet consists mostly of other fish (those teeth are good for bottom fishing) and squid. We do not see many Ono during the winter months.

Ono means 'Delicious' in Hawaiian and boy is it ever! Like Mahi Mahi, there are plenty of ways to prepare Ono. Ono has firm white meat and can even be cooked on the grill with just a little oil on it.
